I am now here in Bangor and I have had my first lessons of various subjects this week.
Everything works fine, and I adapt to the environment quite well.
Since it’s raining nearly everyday here, I cannot take many photos.
Before I come here, I was told that Bangor was rainy –
but I didn’t know it would be “so” rainy.
People here are very friendly and nice.
When I ask people about places or something on the street,
they will stop and try their best to answer.
As a person from Hong Kong,
it is quite curious that people will spend so much time to answer a question when they do not really know the answer.
I think that is the characteristic of people living in the countryside.
Anyway, it’s a nice thing for me.
On the other hand, I had some problems with my department.
Since no one in the department told me what to do when I arrived,
I took several days to figure out which classes I should go.
The office hour is so short that I can never reach the appropriate person.
Moreover, it seems that it’s a norm here that you have to ask about everything.
If you don’t ask, they will never mention it to you,
even though they know that you are a new international student.
For example, when I did my registration with the registry office,
they did not tell me that I should have applied for a student card in the same office.
It took me one more day to find out the secret.
And when I submitted my application of student card,
they did not tell me that I should collect the card at the bottom of the hill,
while the office is actually at the top of the hill.
Because of the above reason, I get a lot of exercises.
That’s not too bad.
It is a peaceful and safe town in general,
but I was told not to go out alone when it is dark since there will be some drunk people hanging around.
Police warns international students for “hate crime”,
but it is far less serious than those in big cities.
Food is the most serious problem for me.
I just know that UK people do not sell chicken wings! (my favourite)
Also, it is hard to buy “normal” kitchenware, such as folk, knife, spoon, etc.
I had to search nearly every shop on the main streets in order to find a knife.
I know how to cook, but the problem is that I cannot get the appropriate materials.
I have had pasta for nearly a week.
Anyway, I am doing well in the new environment.
I quite like the place.

Wow, the campus of your university is beautiful. With such splendid scenery, you must have no doubt that you are
REALLY living outside HK, right? Those pictures make me homesick... Yes, people on the street are usually nicer
than those in Hong Kong. I think one of the reasons is that their pace of living is slow. They are not in rush anyway,
why not spending time chatting friendly with different people during the day?! I think you will get used to having
small talks soon. Hope you enjoy your life over there. Wait for further news coming from you.

It's a bit disappointed that no chicken wings is available as it is my favourite too especially you do not have much choice (I guess). But it is
回覆刪除great that there are friendly, nice local people around and the town is safe. The campus is very very beautiful. It doesn't seem like such a
rainy town. Enjoy!!
Kimmi
Hi Pancy,
Great to hear that you are settling in quite nicely. With so
much exercise - both for your legs and your mouth - and no
chicken wings (aya...fattening..ar!) around, we should see a
'new' Pancy in the near future.
Hey! You should take some 'before' photos now and some 'after'
photos three months later!
Take care,
Liza
To Doreen,
I guess the towns in Mortreal would look very much similar to Bangor, right?
I didn't have friends to go out with me now, or I will go to visits the castles here.
I act quite weird when I talk to people here - maybe they would think that I'm rude.
In HK, it's polite NOT to keep the conversation too long.
While in here, it's NOT polite to keep the conversation too short, especially when you are not dealing with office people.
Well, I'm trying to tune my speed.
To Kimmi,
It's ALWAYS raining, believe me!
To Liza,
When I look at the "size" of the people on the street, I doubt that whether I can lose some weight by just having no chicken wings and walking.
I assume that they don't have as many chicken wings as I do and walk more than I do,
but they are still bigger than me...
If I don't gain weight further, I would be happy.
Hi Pancy
Good to know you're settling in. Hope you'll enjoy your studies.
I'm a bit surprised to hear you can't get chicken wings. How about drumsticks (chicken thighs)?
Perhaps you can buy whole chickens (they're cheap in the UK), and save up the wings! :-)
BTW, I really like the design and colour scheme of your blog.
God bless
Stella
Hi Stella,
Yup! There are drum sticks, thigh, and all other parts, except wings... it seems that all wings are attached to breast part.
The point is that, I want to make "Curry Chicken Wings and potatos", it's good for serving with rice.
I may have to change my habit in making curry dishes.
I try to get a color scheme that will not burn people's eyes, this one looks soft and comfortable.
Thanks for visiting! Do come back and check when you have time. ^_^
